Independent engineering for the energy transition

Reneng is a consulting and advisory engineering firm bringing deep development experience to renewable energy projects. We guide owners, developers and investors from early feasibility through to delivery — and we are building to do more as South Africa's energy market liberalises.

As the sector liberalises, sound technical judgement is what separates a project that gets built from one that stalls. Reneng combines hands-on development know-how with rigorous, independent engineering — helping our clients make confident decisions and protecting their interests at every stage of a project.

What we do

Engineering services across the project lifecycle

01

Feasibility & Advisory

Every sound energy strategy starts with efficiency — using less before generating more. We assess sites, test assumptions and pressure-test the numbers: feasibility studies, technical due diligence and strategy advice that tell you whether a project stacks up, before you commit capital.

02

Owner's Engineering

We represent your interests on the project, not the contractor's. Independent oversight, review and technical assurance so that what gets delivered is what you were promised.

03

Development Support

We help move projects forward — supporting development, planning and consenting, and route-to-market for renewable generation as the market evolves.

Where we add value

An owner's perspective, an engineer's discipline

We work across the renewable energy value chain, bringing an owner's perspective and an engineer's discipline to every engagement.

Technology

Solar PV, battery energy storage and biogas, grid-connected and behind-the-meter.

Independent judgement

Unconflicted advice — we answer to you, not to a contractor or supplier.

Development depth

Real experience taking projects through development, not just reviewing them.

Whole-project view

From feasibility and due diligence to delivery oversight and commissioning.

Grid & route-to-market

Grid connection realities and evolving routes to market in a liberalising sector.

Built to grow

Positioned to take on development and new services as South Africa's market matures.

Selected experience

Fifteen years across the renewable energy value chain

Representative engagements our team has led and delivered:

  1. 01

    Commercialising utility-scale renewables

Assessed project value for investors, negotiated sale and purchase agreements, and steered utility-scale transactions through to financial close — including a 500 MW grid-connected PV and battery storage portfolio. Secured grid capacity and environmental authorisation across a 1 GW+ solar, wind and battery pipeline.

    500 MW To financial close
  2. 02

    Public-sector renewable procurement

Structured tender specifications and power purchase agreements for 300 MW of independent power, and developed commercial-scale municipal solar — including one of South Africa's first municipally owned grid-connected PV facilities.

    300 MW IPP procurement structured
  3. 03

    Owner's engineering on waste-to-energy

Acted as owner's and lender's engineer on a 4.4 MWe grid-connected biogas plant under a FIDIC contract — overseeing construction, commissioning and performance testing, and delivering around $1.5 M in client savings through rigorous contract management. More recently, contracted to assist in construction oversight for the 5 MWe expansion of the Bronkhorstspruit Biogas Project.

  4. 04

    Rural electrification & mini-grids

Delivered electrification of 2,500 rural households through hybrid solar-battery mini-grids and smart metering as the EPC project manager.

    2,500 Households electrified
  5. 05

    Feasibility & energy-efficiency advisory

Completed some 15 feasibility studies spanning industrial energy efficiency, commercial solar, small-scale hydro and waste-to-energy — including securing utility rebate funding for $2 M of municipal energy-efficiency infrastructure.

Who we are

Independent advice, grounded in real project experience

Reneng was founded in 2012 by Gordon Kernick to bring independent, technically grounded advice to energy projects. It began with feasibility work spanning industrial energy efficiency, commercial solar, small-scale hydro and waste-to-energy — and grew as South Africa's energy landscape opened up.

We are based in Cape Town and work primarily in the South African market, drawing on project experience from across the continent — utility-scale solar and storage, rural electrification, and waste-to-energy. That breadth matters: it means we understand how projects actually get built, financed and connected, not just how they look on paper.
